Children harvest fruits and veggies for YWCA community kitchen
Children from YWCA Crabtree Corner Early Learning and Care, located in the Downtown Eastside, recently visited the YWCA's Rooftop Food Garden to help harvest organic produce for the community kitchen at Crabtree Corner.
The children’s visit to the Rooftop Food Garden was a chance for them to learn about where food comes from and to experience the enjoyment of picking fresh fruits and vegetables. And enjoy they did—as they crammed large blackberries into their mouths, crunched on raw green beans and munched on freshly picked carrots. With such a wide array of delicious produce, the YWCA had no problem getting these youngsters to eat their fruits and veggies!
The YWCA’s downtown garden provides healthy, nutritious food to women and their families at YWCA Crabtree Corner. Many of the children who came to harvest fruits and veggies also attend the meal programs at Crabtree Corner and had never seen real food growing in the ground.
