Community Development for YWCA Housing Tenants
YWCA Metro Vancouver believes that quality housing provides opportunities for tenants to become involved in creating their own unique community. Residents of YWCA housing communities are encouraged to play an active role in creating a space that is a healthy and supportive place to live.
A Community Developer works at Alder Gardens, Semlin Gardens and Fraser Gardens, encouraging tenants to participate in activities that will create a positive, healthy community, where they can learn new skills and work towards future goals. The Community Developer also works with the women to identify their personal needs and take actions to improve their quality of life.
Services provided by the Community Developer include:
- Connections to YWCA programs and services, including single mothers' services, Presents of Peace holiday hampers and employment programs
- Workshops on topics such as self-esteem, conflict resolution, anger management and assertiveness
- Information and resources
- Facilitation of tenant meetings and community event
- Support for tenants groups, such as community gardening, residential safety, community kitchen and children’s programs
