Legal Education and Advocacy Services

Legal Educator

The legal educator provides a wide range of legal support to women and answers questions regarding legal issues. The legal educator is not a lawyer (and does not offer legal advice), but offers education, specific resources, referrals and support around legal issues.

The legal educator provides workshops for YWCA programs on legal topics as well as one-to-one support for YWCA clients. These issues include, but are not limited to:

  • Family law
  • Residential tenancy
  • Poverty law

The Legal Educator can also interpret and answer questions on legal documents such as:

  • Custody agreements
  • Peace bonds
  • Affidavits
  • Eviction notices

Domestic Violence Outreach Worker

The violence outreach worker provides one-on-one support, advocacy and outreach to women in the Downtown Eastside who have experienced violence or abuse in a current or past relationship. Her work is part of the YWCA Metro Vancouver's Violence Outreach Program, based out of Crabtree Corner, and involves:

  • safety planning and support
  • information about the types and effects of abuse
  • advocating for women involved with services as such child protection, the criminal justice system, housing and health care
  • collaborating with other advocates to address systemic issues faced by abused women

The Violence Outreach Program helps women gain strength and independence, breaks the silence around abuse and provides community support so women don’t feel alone. When a woman participates in the program, she is able to access other services at Crabtree Corner, including early learning and child care, support groups, parenting programs and hot meals.

In 2010, the program plans to offer a support group for women who have experienced abuse. The goals of the group will be safety, support and education, as well as addressing violence against women as a social, rather than personal, problem.
