RBC Olympians harvest crops at the YWCA Rooftop Food Garden

RBC Olympians and Paralympians, including gold medal rower Adam Kreek, joined children from YWCA Citygate Early Learning and Care Centre last month to harvest crops from the YWCA Rooftop Food Garden.

As part of the United Way Day of Caring, these athletes got a different form of exercise from spending two hours in the garden doing everything from pulling carrots and picking beans, to hauling compost and hoeing dirt, as well as making new friends with the children at Citygate. As they gardened, the group of three to five year olds learned all about fruits and veggies, and how important they are for physical fitness and a healthy lifestyle.

The YWCA Rooftop Food Garden, located in Downtown Vancouver, grows organic fruits and vegetables for women and children on the Downtown Eastside. The garden, which produces hundreds of kilograms of food every year, is run entirely by volunteers.
