Stopping Violence Against Women
Violence against women is a systemic social problem that transcends class, culture and socio-economic conditions. In the absence of supports that enable women to live autonomously – child care, housing, training and legal aide – many women return repeatedly to abusive partners. We know that domestic violence is a key factor that prevents women from achieving economic independence. It also has long-term, inter-generational implications and children who witness abuse are much more likely to be overtly aggressive.
The YWCA will continue to raise awareness of the implications of violence in society and to educate youth about the behaviours and attitudes that are fundamental to healthy relationships. We will advocate for reforms and supports that enable women to make a successful transition to economic independence.
YWCA Vancouver maintains a detailed resource brochure called Stopping the Violence to help the community understand and resist violence against women. It is distributed to over 300 community organizations in the Lower Mainland and include tips on how to help a woman who is being abuse.
