That's Just Me
After-School Program for Gr. 7 Girls in Surrey
That’s Just Me is an after-school program offered at selected elementary schools in Surrey to help Grade 7 girls with their transition to high school, which can be challenging and complicated.
This seven-week program is focused on three major themes: choice, friends and balance. Through activities such as games, small group discussions, skits and a community service learning project, our students will explore a variety of topics including self-esteem, healthy lifestyles, peer relationships and internet safety. The students will be able to feel more confident and prepared for their transition to high school and will have the skills and knowledge to be able to engage in positive decision-making.
There are two session per year, and each session runs once a week for 2.5 hrs per session over seven weeks. The fall session runs October to December, with volunteer recruitment beginning in September. The spring session runs February to April, with volunteer recruitment beginning in January.
That’s Just Me is presented by YWCA Metro Vancouver in partnership with the Surrey School District.
Each program is led by two university/college students, one High School Mentor and one mature volunteer, known as a Wisdom ChampionTM Mentor. The role of all the volunteers is to both facilitate and deliver the program, as well as share stories, personal experiences and provide advice that will help encourage girls to be more healthy and confident and encourage girls to work together to take on responsibility for social and community issues.
