Typhoon June
Known for her tenacity and determination, Typhoon June, as she was called by friends and family, was a strong YWCA supporter and woman ahead of her time. She felt strongly about the status of women, believing that all women should strive for self-sufficiency. She attended the Hi-Y camp on Gabriola Island as a young woman and supported the YWCA for many years, making two unique gifts at the end of her life.
In 2005, June gave a gift of securities to the YWCA and was able to take advantage of the new tax laws that make such gifts to charities a favourable option for donors. Today, gifts of publicly traded securities to charity incur no capital gains tax, which sometimes makes it more advantageous for donors to give securities rather than cash gifts. Celia Campos, Fund Development Manager, says “June is one of many donors, past and present, who are taking advantage of tax laws to make their gifts to the YWCA go farther.”
While June passed away fairly suddenly in November 2006, she planned ahead to support programs she believed in. She thoughtfully included a bequest to YWCA Vancouver in her will and showed her support for programs that build women’s self-esteem and economic independence. In return, YWCA Vancouver was able to issue a tax receipt to her estate, reducing the taxes payable to the government.
Sylvia Keyes, June’s daughter, says, “She knew exactly what she wanted out of life, and how she thought society should be. Through her bequest, my mom was able to demonstrate her values.” Sylvia, who now works for Pacific Riding for Developing Abilities (PRDA), says she was actually a PRDA volunteer and rider before she became a staff member. June’s other daughters, Tina and Paula, are also involved in the community and see the value of giving back to others.
Through her actions, June has instilled a strong sense of giving into her family. Typhoon June’s spirit and determination live in the lives that she touched. Through her bequest to the YWCA, June will continue to help children, youth and women all over the Lower Mainland even after her lifetime.
