Launched in 1997, the 100th birthday year of YWCA Vancouver, the YWCA Real Story Competition invites young men and women to explore their goals and dreams for the future by writing about women who inspire them.
The competition invites students in grades 8–12 from Greater Vancouver to submit an essay on the topic "She Inspires Me." Each year, hundreds of submissions are received from throughout the Lower Mainland, Fraser Valley, Howe Sound and Sunshine Coast.
All entries are screened by a group of volunteers, with the top entries passed on to a judging panel. The identity of each writer is unknown throughout the process. To determine the winning entries, judges considered both the inspirational impact of the entries as well as the insightful perspectives conveyed by the stories.
