Seed Starting and Propagation

Tuesday April 17, 2012
6:00pm - 9:00pm
YWCA Metro Vancouver, 535 Hornby Street

Presented by the SPEC-YWCA Urban Farmer Field School, a program that emphasizes sound practices, experiential education and participation.

What does it mean for seeds to be heirloom, hybrid, open-pollinated, organic or conventional? Make sense of those seed catalogs while learning the best ways to start your garden from seed, both indoors and out. In addition to hands-on practice, students will learn the botany of plant reproduction (what the birds and bees are actually doing), and practice several methods of vegetative propagation, for both annuals and perennials.

Instructor
Lis Thomas is a horticulturist who worked in community greening in NYC before moving to Vancouver. She is currently running the YWCA Metro Vancouver Rooftop Food Garden and is also studying post-industrial soil remediation as part of an MSc. in Plant Science. Lis is passionate about urban agriculture, bicycling, native plants, metal fabrication, and circus arts.
